Spurs vs. Heat- Built vs. Bought

NBA_Finals_logo,_2007Last night during the NBA finals halftime show, analyst and former player Jalen Rose used two interesting terms to describe the two basketball teams’ roads to success.  Rose explained how the San Antonio Spurs were built while the Miami Heat were bought.  No one questions the success of either team as the Heat play in their third final in three years and the Spurs seek their third championship since 1999.  Both enjoy remarkable success, yet take two radically different approaches to building a winning cultue. I find some striking parallels with how we develop leadership teams (and people in general) in both established churches and church-plants.   Continue reading

12 years of marriage & counting

Yesterday was a double-whammy celebration: Mother’s Day and my twelfth wedding anniversary. God continuously reminds me how He’s blessed our family with an amazing mom and wife, so I decided to share with Christin over the past twelve days some of those thoughts through a Twelfth Anniversary Countdown listing what I love about her… and I want you to know what I love most about Christin.  Warning: this could be considered sappy.  Continue reading

discovering our story in God’s story

Today I was reflecting on how our personal stories fit in God’s bigger story a.k.a the Biblical meta-narrative.  I came across this quote from H. Stephen Shoemaker, the author of Godstories:

  • Do we see how our individual stories belong in the context of His story?

Belated Baptism Pics

I’ve finally posted some pics of Rick’s baptism on Easter Sunday.  Rick is a Army veteran and resident of Burlington’s Old North End who became a follower of Jesus earlier this year.  We’re excited about what God is doing in Rick’s life and believe his story is the beginning of many other stories.

Running into the fire

While skimming articles, pictures, and videos of the horrific Boston Marathon bombing, I keep noticing how some people were s130415_03-4_3_r536_c534running towards the bomb blasts to help while everyone else was running away.  I wonder- what makes some people run in when everyone else is fleeing?  Many people stood out as heroes- the Boston police, first responders, even a former Patriot’s football player- but one especially caught my attention.  You may have seen the pics of the big guy in the cowboy hat named Carlos Arredando. Gosnell Abortion Clinic Trial

Last week I came across a USA Today Opinion column by Kirsten Powers detailing the murder trial of Pennsylvania abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell and how “there has been precious little coverage of the case that should be on every news show and front page.”  Warning: reading this article made my stomach churn.  Since that April 11 article, news coverage has significantly increased.  The best article I’ve read on this issue from a Christian perspective is a post by Justin Buzzard titled, The Abortion of AbortionContinue reading
