If you tried to canoe the Mississippi River today from source to mouth you could find detailed maps describing every turn, obstruction, and current you’ll encounter on your route. You could research water depths, current speeds, and weather conditions with a simple google search. If we were to rewind to the 1680s when the Frenchman Sieur de La Salle was exploring the river from its confluence with the Illinois River to the Gulf of Mexico, the experience would be far different. Church Planting
BIG PICTURE, small steps
I’m a big picture kind of guy. I like to dream big and ask big questions about what God can do in and through our little church: Continue reading
launching new Gospel Communities
This Sunday marks another important milestone for Burlington City Church as we launch our first Gospel Community in Burlington’s Old North End on North Champlain Street. Continue reading
from Home Fellowships to Gospel Communities
For the past few weeks, the Burlington City Church Pastors/Elders have been discussing, praying and celebrating the current state of Burlington City Church and where God is taking us. It is a really exciting time in the life of the church and we’re excited to be on mission together. One of the topics of conversation has been the primary term we use for our communities of people on mission together: “Home Fellowships”. We wanted to be sure that the term we use for the primary expression of our church actually communicates what we are trying to say. Continue reading

Celebrating BCC’s 1st Baptism!
On Sunday, June 17, Burlington City Church celebrated its first baptism! Following our 406 North Ave. Home Fellowship’s Sunday morning meeting we strolled down to Lake Champlain with onlookers from the sand and bike path (even got a standing ovation from two power walkers). We are so excited about what God is doing in Maura’s life as a new follower of Jesus. Continue reading
Meet the Sutphens
God continues to amaze me with how He continues to send “workers for the harvest” to Burlington. One of the most amazing stories is how He has sent a “home-town boy” back to Burlington. Almost a year ago Robin Sutphen contacted me via this blog, and a little over a week ago he and his family moved into their apartment on North Champlain St. in Burlington as he takes on the role of general manager at the Boloco restaurant on Church St. Here’s some of their story from Robin Continue reading

This is Discipling
One of our Burlington City Church college students, Kevin Valentin, shared this video with me today. I’d say Kevin gets what God has called us to do as His church in this city. Please pray for Kevin V and others as they pray about launching a Home Fellowship in the downtown/university area of Burlington in the coming months.
Burlington City Church- Vision & Values (part 3)
These are the notes from the third and final week of a series on the foundational vision and values that drive Burlington City Church. In part 1 we asked What is the church? and What is the church’s mission? In part 2 we asked, How does this practically look in 2012 Burlington, VT? In our Home Fellowship meeting on April 1 we asked, What will this require of us? Continue reading
